line-height: 19px;\">As parents and teachers, we encourage our kids to become well rounded people who love learning. \u00a0 In our world of cell phones, ipads, and computers, it&#8217;s easy for kids to become passive consumers of media and technology. \u00a0 We, however, want are kids to be active, curious, and creative. \u00a0 Since I&#8217;m a musician and a software engineer, I hope that my kids learn to express themselves emotively and become creative thinkers. \u00a0 We&#8217;re trying to foster a family culture where we are active, encourage tinkering, and building physical things with our hands. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With these ideas in mind, I wanted to share a great video I found by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/keepingupwithit.edublogs.org\" target=\"_blank\">Vinnie Vrotny<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/petersonartblog.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sheryl Peterson<\/a>\u00a0entitled &#8220;STEAM: Creating A Maker Mindset.&#8221; \u00a0 In this conference talk from the <a href=\"http:\/\/k12onlineconference.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">K12 Online Conference<\/a>\u00a0in 2013, they share their experiences encouraging a &#8220;maker&#8221; mindset in the\u00a0Quest Academy . \u00a0 Their school has a very unique class teaching design thinking to kids. \u00a0 \u00a0It&#8217;s giving me lots of ideas for building a maker environment for our family. \u00a0 \u00a0In this class, Sheryl encourages her students to invent a creative design problem and solve it. \u00a0 With the tools and support of the teacher, the kids are encouraged to build their design. \u00a0 \u00a0In some cases, the kids ask Sheryl to assign a problem to them. \u00a0 \u00a0The kids aren&#8217;t used to having creative freedom to design and make. \u00a0 \u00a0In these cases, Sheryl encourages the students to keep thinking. \u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G44awSTpMmk\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the key ideas that I enjoyed from the session.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">How do you encourage the mindset of a maker?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">What is a maker mindset?<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> \u00a0Makers are people who have a persistent tinkering mentality. \u00a0 \u00a0While makers love to learn, they also enjoy transforming their new ideas into physical artifacts. \u00a0 \u00a0A makers mindset encourages continuous growth and a love of learning.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Values:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> In the design of their teaching style and environment, Sheryl celebrated the design values of <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\" href=\"http:\/\/designthinking.ideo.com\/?p=1282\" target=\"_blank\">Ideo<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">, a prominent design and innovation firm. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<ul>\n<li><a style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\" href=\"http:\/\/vimeopro.com\/ideo\/value-videos\" target=\"_blank\">Be optimistic<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\" href=\"http:\/\/vimeopro.com\/ideo\/value-videos\" target=\"_blank\">Collaborate<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\" href=\"http:\/\/vimeopro.com\/ideo\/value-videos\" target=\"_blank\">Embrace Ambiguity<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\" href=\"http:\/\/vimeopro.com\/ideo\/value-videos\" target=\"_blank\">Learn from failure<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\" href=\"http:\/\/vimeopro.com\/ideo\/value-videos\" target=\"_blank\">Make others successful<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\" href=\"http:\/\/vimeopro.com\/ideo\/value-videos\" target=\"_blank\">Take ownership: individual ownership supports collective responsibility.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\" href=\"http:\/\/vimeopro.com\/ideo\/value-videos\" target=\"_blank\">Talk Less, Do More<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li><strong style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Model the &#8220;Maker&#8221; Spirit:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> The speakers noted that it was important to model the &#8220;maker&#8221; mindset for the students. \u00a0 Instead of purchasing a professional &#8220;green screen&#8221; for the class space, Sheryl made one. \u00a0 Sheryl took great care to construct their classroom environment and build many of their tools. \u00a0Students learn &#8220;DIY&#8221; by seeing their teacher do &#8220;DIY.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Teaching style<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Blending the best of many:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> The design class blends aspects from other class room experiences and environments:<\/span><\/li>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Shop class<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Art class<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Computer lab<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Project based learning<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Science Lab<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li><strong style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Environment is key:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> I see similarities between creating an effective educational maker space and the ideas from <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Montessori_education\" target=\"_blank\">Montessori education<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> . \u00a0 \u00a0While the students have freedom to decide on the goals of their design project and freedom to drive their activities, the environment is designed to foster student creativity and curiosity. \u00a0 Like Montessori education, the intentional environment fosters learning and enables the students to personalize their learning.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 The environment naturally encourages the students to collaborate too.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Maker spaces don&#8217;t need to start big and expensive. \u00a0 The speakers shared that some maker spaces started $200.00 and very simple materials that you might find in an art classroom: tape, glue, cardboard, recycled equipment, etc. \u00a0 \u00a0Start simple and grow!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Resources and References:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/k12onlineconference.org\/?p=2246\" target=\"_blank\">Post from K12 Online Conference<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a style=\"font-size: 13px;
